12 phrases to inspire confidence in children

July 19, 2019

Words have great power.

As parents we have the ability to inspire great confidence in our children if we choose the right words to share with them.

Think back to your own childhood - do you remember the things your parents and peers said to you over and over?

"Yes" - regardless of whether they were positive or negative - most of us carry our parent's words (wise or not) into adulthood.

Words are powerful and have the capacity to impact and influence minds from a very young age. Knowing this means it's important to be mindful of the language we use when communicating with children.

It's not hard - all it takes is a little self reflection and mindfulness.

To get you started, here are 12 simple phrases you can use every day to encourage your child to feel loved and develop confident:

  • I'm proud of you
  • I believe in you
  • You matter
  • You are capable and deserving
  • Be kind to yourself and others
  • What do YOU think?
  • I'm listening
  • I love your ideas
  • Thank you for helping
  • You can learn from mistakes
  • Believe in yourself
  • Trust your instincts

When you read this list, it's hard to imagine a life where words like these wouldn't exist within families.

But sometimes life gets busy and emotions flare up - to the point where we forget to take the time to be mindful of what we're saying and doing.

So if it helps, write your own list! Perhaps you could create a family mantra and have it printed for the wall where everyone can see it.

If you are struggling for ideas, think back to your own childhood or even your current life - how would you like others to speak to you - what words would inspire and encourage you to believe in yourself and feel loved.

It's amazing to think that something as simple as "words" has the power to transform lives.
